The University of Warwick (UW), a founding member of the EUTOPIA Alliance, in partnership with Monash University (MU), one of EUTOPIA’s global partners, has unveiled the findings of a pioneering research project focused on inclusivity and cohesion within multicultural cricket teams. In a time when the principles of inclusion and diversity are alarmingly challenged across the globe, this project, developed through the Monash Warwick Alliance and led by Dr. Kieran File and Dr. Lucas Santos, underscores the importance of such work in fostering greater societal cohesion.

The study highlights how everyday behaviours and interactions within multicultural cricket teams, particularly those involving South Asian migrant players, can either promote a sense of belonging or unintentionally lead to exclusion. Dr. Kieran File, Principal Investigator at UW explains:

“Our research revealed that many challenges to inclusion arise from everyday, taken-for-granted actions and behaviours. These can unintentionally create barriers, but with thoughtful adjustments, they can foster a stronger sense of belonging.”

This study responds to key concerns outlined in the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket’s report, “Holding Up a Mirror to Cricket”, which highlights long-standing challenges faced by South Asian migrant players in the UK. Based on these insights, the key focus of the research is to explore how multicultural teams can achieve lasting inclusivity, and the role communication plays in shaping team dynamics. Using qualitative methods, the researchers identified actionable strategies for players, coaches, parents and administrators to build more inclusive team environments. Dr. Lucas Santos, Principal Investigator at MU states:

“This resource demonstrates how sports organisations and diverse stakeholders can contribute positively to establishing and sustaining inclusive sporting cultures that welcome individuals from all backgrounds."

This project effectively showcases how global collaborations can address complex societal challenges through research and innovation. Additionally, its focus on inclusivity, diversity, and community cohesion not only reflects EUTOPIA’s core values, but also underscores the importance of addressing these issues where such values are increasingly under threat in many parts of the world.
